yesterday i had an impromptu session requested by my niece. the results are some of my favorite images as of late. love these little girls a million zillion (and I could shoot in their sweet room for hours and hours).

one of many things i took away from my afternoon with courtney and sonja is that, as with anything you want or value in life, love has to be the priority. you have to seek it, feed it, cherish it.

i’m happy to include these two in my file of inspiring relationships. what a wonderful world it would be if everyone had an equally supportive and harmonious partnership.

happy valentines day to courtney, sonja and all you other crazy kids in love out there.

‘sentimental you and faithful me ‘ – mike & christina, wed

mike and christina are among the most wholehearted people i’ve ever met. they don’t flinch before expressing genuine emotion and gratitude. their wedding day was a reflection of that most rare of loves.

during our portrait time along with mike and christina, i put christina on a high tree stump to take some bridal shots. mike stood back staring at her with the sweetest smile on his face and started to cry. these two most definitely put one another on a pedestal, and my heart swelled when my idea for a creative shot of a bride among the trees turned into a representation of that.

right after the ceremony, christina was examining her thin wedding band to read what mike had engraved in it. she thought it said, “my best friend.” when mike corrected her and told her it actual reads, “my dearest friend,” she burst into tears, and so did he.
their wedding was held at christina’s childhood church in black forest, which was so lovely because it was so personal and quaint.

congratulations to mike and christina! your sweet friendship is a shining example of what it’s all about.

huge thanks to my friend jane kovash for once again coming from san francisco to shoot with me!

‘we have so much love’ – bride’s choice award

huge thanks to my 2011 brides for the lovely reviews that earned me this “wedding wire bride’s choice award!” it’s a little badge of honor that i’m told puts me in the top 5% of wedding professionals nationwide. if loving what you do is all it takes to get a badge, then i can hope for a full sash soon enough.

‘why can’t you ever see what’s in front of you’ – 5 sf diptychs

going through a stack of hard drives to collect photos for yesterday’s post, i found a file of unedited photos from san francisco taken in the fall of 2010. it would be easy to say they were just personal files indefinitely stuck at the bottom of the priority list, but i think it’s more than that. even though i exposed for them and framed them, i didn’t really see them when i uploaded the files. no big deal. a weak attempt at street photography.

cut to 15 months later and i see them. i love them for their simplicity and for their reminder of wandering the city solo, feeling at once at home and a bit lost without a time or performance pressure. often as artists, we attempt things that are just plain wrong/bad/unworthy. but sometimes we’re just not ready for what we’re producing. we’re ahead of our own time.

it’s also true of photographs that we love them more with time. that’s why we call photos investments: there’s no depreciating value, only accumulating interest over the years.

hello 2012! i’m an unwaivering believer in the unlikely and transformation, so i hope the new year finds you with your sights on something fresh, lovely, just plain better or some combination of those things.

so as to not potentially blow a surprise, here is just half of my session with justin and casey, shot high above breckenridge around hoosier pass. get this: they met while working at the photo lab at colorado state university! so appropriate, despite how i donated my beloved toy film camera to the drifts of the rockies during our shoot (search and rescue was doing training around where we were shooting…don’t think i didn’t think about asking them to hone their skills by searching for my holga).
